.

Hello Guy's

The Boy's & I thank you for all the congrats, it's a wonderful feeling to share this hobby with you fine collectors.

Ken, we believe that your right about the stenciling thing, but it is very well done, sort of baked on. Because it is made so well we do not believe that it was the only one with that cover, perhaps just the first run maybe fifty or so. We think that your #33 may have a stenciled "49", any luck on the paint removal.

Stefan, yes it did come as a big surprize because we thought that the serial number should have been located on a rivited metal tag, but not so in this case. We thought that the 49-1 number was a part or code number. We don't know of any other Mc models that have the serial stamped in the handle like that, does anyone know another model?

McBob "Never say never" You have the finest collection of Atoms in the world. "Cricky" I'll bet that at one time you " Never" thought that would be the case either. We thank you because we had "Never" seen or heard of them before.

Wayne, if that old girl could talk what stories she would tell. She could answer all are questions about a saw that is only fifty years old. But then we wouldn't have all this fun speculating.

Now back to the "49", some interesting observations.
Marshall has #1001 so we know that at least that many were produced.
The factory photo shows the newer style bar, and the grill over the fan shroud. But we do not see any with that new bar or the grill, there are no mounting holes for the grill, interesting! ???????

Happy Hunting!
Tom and the Boy's

And now look at that thread McBob started about his Mac 73 with stamped numbers in the same place and starting with 47-
Following on what Marshall said above, there must have been a bunch of fast changes happening at 6101 Century Blvd during that time of transition from 47 to 49 to 73... people scrambling to come up with the prototype for the big meeting with Mr. Mac on Thursday morning...
I can imagine some R&D engineer telling his secretary, "Oh, while you're at lunch, stop by the art supply store on Santa Monica and pick up a set of 3/4-inch stencils..."

Well, boys, it's a half-hour later and I've got all the lettering for the airfilter cover. There are two coats of yellow over the original paint on my airfilter cover, So far, I've carefully removed most of one, and parts of the middle one... without damaging the original at all...
The early Sunday School kids stared at me through the window of the van, standing out back of the honeyhouse in a pair of old moccasins, levi's, no shirt, with a big yellow chainsaw on the table, gently rubbing on it and staring at it close-up... Maybe one or two wished they could come and see what I was doin', instead of havin' to go and sit still and be clean while listening to Sister Chaney tell 'em about Elijah and tha Fiery Chariot... again...
My 49-33 has the block numerals. The text on the airfilter cover says:
[centered at top]
STARTING INSTRUCTIONS
Push ignition switch to "on". Place fuel lever at
center. Push primer 2-3 times. Open throttle wide.
Pull starter rope quickly.

[On left side of cover screw.]
CHAIN OIL
Use oil free from dirt.
Add half kerosene if
cutting in pitch.
Push oiler button
frequently during
cut.

[On right side of cover screw.]
FUEL MIX
1 pint of McCulloch
oil in 2-1/2 gal.
gasoline. Or 1 pint
of oil SAE 30 non-
detergent in 2 gal.
gasoline.

[Centered below cover screw]
49 [block letter 3/4" high]

McCULLOCH MOTORS CORPORATION
6101 Century Blvd., Los Angeles 45 Calif.
[n.b. - All the above caps, lower case, punctuation and line-endings are exact.]

So, Tom... your 49-1 may be the only one with that style of numerals...
and also... notice that one of the pix you posted above may show a 49 with black filter cover and yellow numerals... :? :?: :?: But that may have just been the Mac Art Department's work when making the brochure...

p.s. -- Wayne... GEESES go "ga-WHONK!!... GA-WHONK!!... ga-WHONK!!" :D

Nope, but you could post yours.
Post your saws in the models library. More saws makes better library!
If you need help to post please ask, I will happily help.

Speaking of geese...

I heard the other day that the Geese are part of the Paxton Family Crest or Logo. That is where Mr. Robert Paxton McCulloch came up with it.

Now we will let everyone look into that further and wait for the results!

Kissin' Pigs Is Habit-Formin' - Mac 49

Postby Old Mac Guy » Feb 8th, '10, 05:54

It's been about 2-1/2 years since I started this thread about the rare old McCulloch 49's.
Now today, by sheer luck, I managed to find yet another of these hard-to-find chainsaws.

Great thrread and congratulations to all on their Mac 49 saws. I have one in the garage that says "McCulloch" on the handle and where a metal tag (Ithought) should be there is only 2 holes for rivets, no indication that there was ever a tag put on the saw. There is nothing stamped on the raised metal portion of the handle, but will have to go out and dig her out and have a closer look. it has the hump backed gas tank so I would think its a 4-30 or 4-30A series saw. Will also have to bring my camera home and take some pictures and post them and see what other opinions you may have.

I noticed also that on Mike's site it list a Tillotson HL carb for the Mac 49 saw. Does the 49 saw that everyone here has, have a Tilly carb on it. I have 2 Mac 47 saws with the Mac diaphragm carbs on them. Interesting to see that this was one of the changes between the 2 models. Again congratulations, and as Tom says, "Happy Hunting". Lewis.
My hobby is restoring old chainsaws. Just becaurse its old, doesn't mean it can't run again and be made to look as it did originally.
Note: Sharing info: Anyone can use my posted information on the CSCF without any prior approval. Lewis.
